Salary: £16K-21K (depending on experience) + Benefits
Hours: Mon-Fri, 0900-1700. Some overtime/weekend work required.

Overview

We require a responsible person to administer our Linux servers including deployment, documentation, backups, virus protection, kernel updates, security, hardware monitoring and hardware replacement. Excellent knowledge of TCP/IP networking, Linux (Debian preferred) and Windows XP/Vista interoperability with Samba.

Experience

Previous work experience is not required as long as you have the technical skills.

Technical Skills

You should have at some point done most of the following:

• Downloaded and compiled a kernel from source
• Written scripts using Bash, Perl or Python
• Debugged TCP/IP problems using tcpdump
• Managed firewall rules using iptables
• Created a Debian Package for a program you have written
• Run a name server for your home network using bind

We primarily use Debian Linux servers with a number of custom packages (written in-house) for our small business clients, and VMware on Ubuntu for our larger clients that require Windows Servers. We also have a large number of infrastructure servers running Postfix, Postgresql, Bind, Apache, anti-spam, etc.

As accredited partners with Zen, Dell and Kaspersky, you'll receive top quality training from these companies and will be able to use their top products. For example, we have rackspace within Zen's suite at Manchester Redbus Telecity (along with rackspace at a secondary data centre at Bolton technology exchange). So this is an excellent opportunity for you to put your [home-grown] skills to the test on real, enterprise grade equipment.

All of the staff at 8Networks are enthusiasts, and have joined either straight from Uni, or have moved from other professions. It is not unusual to see staff on Jabber at all times of the day (and night), answering emails, or upgrading servers.

About you

Aside from the technical skills you have, you will be a responsible person and also have an eye for detail. Presentation is important, and you should have excellent command of the English Language.
